Maicao is a city located in the north-eastern edge of Colombia, at the shores of the caribbean sea. It was founded the 29th of June of 1927 in a territory previously occupied by the Wayuu people, and since its conception it has been an important commercial hub in the Atlantic Ocean.The city experimented strong comertial growth during the decade of 1970 due to the Venezuela oil bonanza, and in turn received a strong influx of foreign migrants from the middle east who settled in as traders.

Maicao is a border town near the border with Venezuela. Here you will be able to trade colombian pesos for bolívares.As with any other city, it is advised that you keep your personal belongings close and dont wander on your own late at night.If you have planned to move around the regions in Colombia, you might be asked to have the yellow fever vaccine. Omar Ibn Al-Jattab Mosque
Location: Carrera 7 con Calle 11 Hours: Until noon Price: Free entrance The biggest mosque in the country. It was built in 1997, and has a 101 feet marinet, built with italian marble. It can host more than 1000 persons, and it frequented by the muslim population of the city.

Circuito de Playas de La Guajira
Hours: All day long Price: Free entrance La Guajira department has a beautiful beach circuit, which posee un bello circuito de playas caribeñas a las que se puede llegar fácilmente desde Maicao o Riohacha. They also have hotels, restaurants and other services for tourists. The most well known are Mayapo and Cove La Vela.
Typical dishes in Maicao
Due to the great number of arabian immigrants in the city, many restaurants offer typical middle east dishes such as kebabs and shawarmas.
A typical Wayuu dish, made with goat, meat, bones and viscera.
Rice with prawn
Rice with prawn which are boiled and then dehydrated to give them a special flavour. It is served with goat meat.

There currently isn't a passenger train service that has Maicao as a destination.
Maicao by flight
Maicao is served by the Jorge Isaacs Airport, but it currently doesn't operate domestic flights, just charter ones.
Maicao by bus
Maicao is well connected with the rest of Colombia and also with Venezuela. The most frecuent trip is to Riohacha, capital of the La Guajira department, which takes about an hours by bus. From there you will be able to find connections to the rest of colombian cities. The trip from Bogotá can take around 15 hours by bus.
