    About Armenia

    Amenia is the capital of the Department of Quindío, and one of the main cities in the coffee Belt of Colombia. The city was founded on October 14th 1889 by Jesús María Ocampo, who was known as the “Tigrero” (Tiger Killer), as he was a Jaguar hunter. Ocampo bought an extensive terrain where he created a small inn for himself and other pioneers that came from neighboring regions. The city was first known as Villa Holguín in honor of the then president Carlos Holguín Mallarino, but the name was later changed to Armenia in memory to the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923).
