Granada is a municipality in the Department of Meta, located in the center area of the country. It was initially founded as Boquemonte by the spaniards, in an area previously occupied by the Guayupe, Sae and Operigua cultures. Boquemonte then came to serve as the entry point to the hostile territory of the rainforest near the Ariari River.In 1956 the city changes its name to Nueva Granada and becomes a municipality. Nowadays it is the second most visited touristic destination in the Department, and is sought after by those interested in ecotourism and adventure.
Travel tips for Granada
One of the main attractions of the Meta Department is the Caño Cristales, known as the River of the Five Colors. We recommend you take some time to visit this natural wonder located in the La Macarena Serranía. If you have planned to move around the regions in Colombia, you might be asked to have the yellow fever vaccine. Other vaccines that you should consider -in case you travel to rainforest areas- are the tetanus vaccine and the hepatitis A/B.The electric current kind used in Colombia is 110-volt AC (110 V), with a frequence of 60 Hz. We recommend you to have a plug adapter if you travel to places that use other voltage to avoid that the electronic devices suffer a short-circuit and don't work.

The things to do in Granada
Visit the La Macarena Mountain Range
From Granada you will be able to witness the northern part of the La Macarena Mountain range, which also possesses a National Park dedicated to safeguarding the flora and Fauna of the area. In order to reach the park it might better to first head to the La Macarena municipality, or rather rent a car to move freely across the whole region.
Typical dishes in Granada
Mamona a la llanera
It's a delicious dish that has several slices of young veal, which are served with green fried banana, potato, manioc and some people serve it with guacamoles sauce. A refreshing pineapple juice is perfect to drink with this food.
Sancocho de gallina criolla
This delicious soup has several tubers and legumes and has hen meat, whose flavor is highlighted if it's a creole hen. Beans, peas, broad beans that accompany the plate.
A fish that lives in the rivers of the plains. The cachama fish is marinated with lemon juice, chilli pepper, salt and cumin and roasted until it's gold-colored. When you serve it, the dish comes with slices of fried banana, tomato salad, onions, lemon and rice.
This side dish has a rectangular shape and it's made of pork, cow and chicken, marinated with coriander and onion and with dough that wrap it.

Currently there isn't a passenger train service that has Granada as a destination.

Granada doesn't have an airport. The closest one is located in Villavicencio, the Capital of the Department.
Granada by bus
Granada is well connected with other colombian cities via highways. The most frecuent route is from Villavicencio, which is the capital of the Department of Meta. From there you will be able to find connections to the rest of the country. Granada is 5 hours away from the capital Bogotá, and a bus fare is usually around 60 000 COP

Summer Festival Journey Through the Ariari River
Festival in which diverse cultural and sport activities are held, like motocross, football and beach volley. The Miss Tanga beauty pageant is held, and there is an incredible party with live Dj´s. The event finishes with a voyage through the Ariari River, where participants hop on car wheels and sail down the river.
