Flota Occidental started working in 1955 in Quinchia, Risaralda with the popular Chivas or ladder buses that mobilized passengers through the different municipalities of Risaralda and Caldas. In its beginnings, it was known as Caldasmar but by including more routes to departments such as Choco, Quindio, Antioquia, Cundinamarca, and Valle del Cauca, among other areas of the country, it changed its name definitively to Flota Occidental, a name that is still maintained and with which this bus operator is recognized in the Colombian road transportation industry. It currently covers 13 of the 14 municipalities of Risaralda.
Amenia is the capital of the Department of Quindío, and one of the main cities in the coffee Belt of Colombia. The city was founded on October 14th 1889 by Jesús María Ocampo, who was known as the “Tigrero” (Tiger Killer), as he was a Jaguar hunter. Ocampo bought an extensive terrain where he created a small inn for himself and other pioneers that came from neighboring regions. The city was first known as Villa Holguín in honor of the then president Carlos Holguín Mallarino, but the name was later changed to Armenia in memory to the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923). Many Armenian tourists visit the city for this particular reason. The “City of Miracles” as it is called, benefited itself from highways created early in the XXth century, which allowed the city to easily reach Zarzal and other cities along the Cauca River and allowed it to development as an important trade hub. Armenia was hit badly by a strong earthquake the 25th of January in 1999 but, after 18 years, the city has been rebuilt and is now one of the most visited colombean city by tourists of all parts of the world.
● Bolivar Plaza: Plaza that marks the founding place of the city. It was the first plaza built by the pioneers and served as a gathering point, market, and water provisioning area. It has a bronze statue in honor of Simón Bolívar.
● The Train Station: Old train station that was built between 1927 and 1930. This building served as an administrative center for the logistics of the National Railway of Colombia. Its majority has been greatly conserved, including the fine decoration of the original design. It now serves as a cultural center and as a library and hosts some administrative offices.
● Maria Inmaculada Cathedral: Tent shaped temple in the middle of the mountain. Has a modern design that incorporates triangles but keeps the traditional design of a cross-shaped plant.
● Armenia to Medellin: It is one of the most popular routes of the company. You can travel on Flota Occidental's Emperador y Gran Emperador Elite services. The bus fares vary from 60000 to 80000 pesos.
