About Salento (Qui)
Salento is the most ancient city of Quindio, which earned it the name of "The Father of Quindio". Located at 1895 m.a.s.l, Salento was founded in 1842 on the Boquia Valley. In there, the penitentiary colony was established, by order of General Pedro Alcantara Herran, president of the Republic at the time. Years later, in 1865, people from Boquia Village decided to move to the space called "Barcinales", which name comes from a native tree that existed at that time. They moved due to the constant overflow of the Quindio River, which caused many floods that damaged homes and crops. From that moment it was decided to change the name to "Villa de Salento".
