About Bucaramanga

About Riohacha
Riohacha is a city located at the shores of the Caribbean sea. It was founded in 1535 by the german Nikolaus Frederman and became a settlement dedicated to the extraction of pearls. Due to its strategic position it suffered several tragedies, such as a raid by british corsair Francis Drake during the XVIIIth century and then a fire provoked by the patriotic army after the sea battle of Laguna Salá. Due to it still being standing as of today, it was named the “Phoenix of the Caribbean”.Until halfway through the XXth century, Riohacha operated as one of the most important Caribbean port for Colombia. Nowadays, Riohacha is a sought after destination visited for its beaches, and is famous for the high amount of references to the city and its history by famous in the works of writer Gabriel García Márquez.
